Valuer Qualifications

Qualified valuers are university graduates who have completed a suitable degree in property and valuation as approved by the New Zealand Institute of Valuers. These degrees include:

  • Bachelor of Business Studies from Massey University
  • Bachelor of Property Administration from Auckland University
  • Bachelor of Commerce from Lincoln University.

A Registered Valuer is one who has completed a minimum of 3 years practical and supervised work experience. At the end of this time an application is made to the Valuers Registration Board. This application consists of personal references plus an in depth portfolio of work undertaken during the minimum 3 years period. Subsequent to the application the valuer is formally tested and interviewed by the Valuers Registration Board and if successful is elevated to the status of Registered Valuer.

Following registration, valuers who complete a further 1 year minimum experience are interviewed by the Membership Committee of the local branch of the Property Institute of New Zealand, and if deemed suitable, are advanced to the status of Associate of the New Zealand Institute of Valuers and are entitled to use the distinctive letters ANZIV.

The New Zealand Institute of Valuers forms part of the Property Institute of New Zealand and Registered Valuers also use the letters MPINZ, or if they have ANZIV status, the letters SPINZ.
